History

The Tulsa County News has been continuously published since 1922, and has undergone several name changes under several owners.

The weekly newspaper was founded as the West Tulsa News. In 1927, John W. “Jack” Anderson acquired the paper and operated it until his death in 1951, when his son DeWitt and wife Nina took over the paper’s operation.

Dexter Publishing Co. purchased the paper in 1955, and changed its name to Tulsa County News. Dexter Moss, Sr., was president of the company and Dexter Moss, Jr., was publisher. Dexter Publishing Co. in 1926 had purchased the Tulsa Daily Legal News.

Bill Retherford acquired the paper in 1965. Tulsa County News was the first of many papers Retherford purchased in the Tulsa metro as he built the Neighbor-Newspapers chain. The newspaper’s name was changed to Southwest Tulsa News in 1991, and changed back to Tulsa County News in 2002.

Community Publishers, Inc., of Bentonville, AR, acquired Neighbor-Newspapers after Retherford’s death in 2005, and Mike Brown became publisher. In April 2008, CPI announced it planned to cease publication of Tulsa County News.

In May 2008, Tulsa County News was purchased by Tulsa County Publishing, Inc. The first issue under the new management was June 4, 2008, and the paper was changed from a tabloid format to a broadsheet, and the office returned to Southwest Tulsa on Southwest Boulevard.

Gary Percefull is president of Tulsa Publishing Inc. He and his wife and business partner Linda Jordan are co-publishers of the Tulsa County News. Longtime staffer Anna Brown is managing editor.
